Module 4 – Safe Conversations Dialogue: A Pathway to Empathy
In this module, we’re going to focus on 2 important practices of Safe Conversations: The Structured Dialogue and Empathy. In module 2 we introduced the Structured Dialogue and practiced the first step in the process, which is Mirroring. In this module, we’ll learn the second and third steps: Validation and Empathy.
We’re also going to cover the Safe Conversations practice of Empathy for Past Challenges. Everyone has experienced challenges in their past that impact their current behaviors and needs. Once we understand this fact, we are better able to Empathize with others (instead of judging them).
This module will give you and your partner the chance to increase your Empathy for each other, by practicing a dialogue exercise designed to help you both discover what past challenges are driving each of your current behaviors and coping strategies.
By the end of this module, you’ll be able to…
- Practice all three steps of the Safe Conversations Dialogue process: Mirroring, Validating and Empathizing
- Increase Empathy for others by making connections between past challenges, unmet needs, and current behaviors
- Identify your main relationship need and the past challenge that triggered this need
- Recognize your coping strategy when relational challenges and conflict arise
