Oh Kristina, thank you so much for sharing that! I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. I am guessing those words from your teenager must have been difficult for you to hear? My kids are younger, but I think I’m in the exact same boat as you are, so reading those words as if my child is saying them… is hard for me to hear. But ultimately good because it will initiate growth in me.
I know I have extremely high standards for myself, and that perfectionism definitely has negative effects. And I think I carry those standards forward for my children too. Not that I jump down their throats for every little thing… I do extend grace plenty of times, and realize that they’re young and still learning. But I do judge a lot about my kids when I apply my standards to them… I think because I want good things for them. I have to journal more about this, about the feelings that come up in me when they do or don’t do certain things. Thanks for getting me thinking!
